Wacom, which makes the haptic motors on some touchpads, has said the technology is extraordinarily expensive to implement, which has limited its adoption on a wider range of Windows laptops so far. The haptic feedback on that laptop, with a snow-white plastic chassis, felt slightly rough and rudimentary compared with the refined implementation on the MacBook Pro. I tried out one such model, the S540, at CES in January. Lenovo has sold other laptops with haptic touchpads before in its home market of China. Upgrading the touchpad and fingerprint reader on the new Yoga will also require selecting a leather exterior, instead of the more common aluminum. Lenovo says the reader is liquid-resistant and is designed to work with damp or “freshly sanitized” fingers. The two new Yoga models also have an optional ultrasonic fingerprint reader built into the glass surface. Lenovo says the shift to haptic feedback allowed it to increase the clickable surface area by nearly half. The haptic pad is embedded in a sleek piece of glass that runs the width of the laptop’s chassis below the keyboard. It’s available as an optional extra on the new Yoga Slim 9i and Yoga 9i, which replaces last year’s Yoga C940 flagship 2-in-1. Lenovo’s haptic tech will be especially snazzy. That means touchpads can be much larger while still offering uniform feedback no matter where your fingertips happen to click. The technology replaces the conventional physical clicking switch that lies beneath the pad’s surface with a tiny motor that vibrates to simulate a click.
